WOOD AND WOODWN CONSTRUCTIONS. PATHOLOGY, PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION TECHNIQUES

The purpose of the course is to acquire theoretical and applied knowledge in matters of wood and wooden constructions.

The objectives of the course are the acquisition by the postgraduate student of the knowledge required to identify the problems of the wooden constructions of the historical buildings, the analysis of the causes, the calculations and the techniques of their protection and maintenance-restoration.

The following subjects will be developed in the courses:

Wood as a building material. Nomenclature. Forms and utilization of construction timber. Historical development of wooden constructions. Wooden structural elements of historic buildings (roofs, floors, stairs, frames). Morphology and methods of construction. Construction problems. Maintenance-Restoration. Structure and properties of wood. Factors of wear and tear. Defects and enemies of wood. Lifetime. Materials and methods of preventive protection. Connection of wooden structures. Historical and modern solutions. Mechanics of wooden constructions. Endurance. Computational methods. Regulations. Thermal insulation, waterproofing, sound insulation of wooden structures. Fire protection of wooden structural elements and constructions. Pathology of wooden structures. Fault diagnosis methods and equipment. Corrective operations. Damage repair. Maintenance. Reinforcement. Materials and methods of performing interventions.
