FIRE PROTECTION FOR THE HISTORICAL BUILDINGS AND COMPLEXES

Due to the teacher's educational leave, it will be taught in the spring semester

General:

The subject of the postgraduate course in question is related to the fire protection design in historical buildings or buildings where cultural treasures are kept (monuments, museums, libraries, etc.) and in historical settlements or ensembles. In particular, this course delves into the fulfillment of fire protection requirements arising from familiar practices in the field of construction or existing regulatory frameworks. By analogy with modern constructions, also in historical constructions the fire protection design is achieved by taking passive and active measures. However, in view of the peculiarities of historical structures, the consideration of fire protection is subject to many limitations or even compromises, against the safety of the users and the construction itself.

Course Educational Objectives:

The educational objectives of the course are focused on meeting the dynamically changing demands of the labor market regarding this complex and demanding subject of fire protection of historic buildings and complexes. In particular, the modern requirements in the building sector make it important to take appropriate decisions and measures regarding the fire protection design of historic buildings and complexes.

Course Analysis:

In the framework of teaching the course on fire protection of historic buildings and complexes, the following subjects (special thematic areas) will be developed:

- Heat Transfer.

– Basic principles of fire behavior (Fire components, fire triangle, types of combustion, phases/periods of fire development and evolution, etc.).

– Thermophysical and mechanical properties of building materials at high temperatures.

– Fire in enclosed spaces (Fire Enclosures).

– Fundamental axes, principles and concepts of fire protection and design against fire.

– Passive – structural fire protection (fire resistance, pyrothermal load, compartmentalization – fire compartments, escape routes, etc.).

– Active fire protection (safety signage, safety lighting, extinguishing agents, fire extinguishers, fire detection systems, suppression systems, etc.).

– Fires – smoke – psychology – human behaviour.

– The particularities of the problem of fire protection for historical buildings.

– Methodologies for calculating basic characteristics of traditional materials and structural elements in historic buildings.

– Prescriptive Fire Design.

– Performance design (Performance Fire Design).

– Regulations – standards – specifications.

– Fire risk evaluation in historic buildings (Fire Risk Evaluation).

– Examples of fire protection design of historic buildings (Case Studies).

– Methodology for the restoration and reinforcement of historic buildings after a fire.

– Fire risks during restoration and maintenance of historic buildings.

– Fire protection of historical sets.
