METHODS OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF HISTORICAL CONSTRUCTIONS

The aim of the course is to present modern methods of static and dynamic analysis of structures using the finite element method and appropriate software. Emphasis is given to the particularities that characterize the behaviour of historical constructions.

The objective of the course is to give the students fluency in static and dynamic analysis of structural system of historic buildings, using specific software.

The following subjects will be developed in the courses:

• Types of load-bearing structures and structural systems of historic buildings.

• Review of analytical methods for static loading and dynamic excitation.

• Review of the basic concepts of the finite element method, with emphasis on 2D elements (discs, plates, shells).

• Analytical modelling of the structural system of the entire buildings and its substructures. Modelling of masses and loads, framed structures, arches and walls of various materials, interaction of frames-walls, diaphragm action of floors, spatial wall assemblages (wall- cores), elastic interaction of foundation and superstructure, substructures with variable (non-linear) behaviour, structural components with contact-support conditions, multi-drum ancient columns etc.

• Analytical modelling of subsequent strengthening in structural systems of historical constructions.

• Key characteristics of the finite element method using specific software. Forms of data and results (displacements, stresses, internal forces), evaluation of results. The necessity of using graphical visualization for data, results and strength capacity control.

• Simple application examples (using specific software package) for linear static and dynamic analysis of structures, consisting of frame, shell and solid finite elements.

• Examples of static and dynamic analysis of historical buildings.

• Within the framework of the course, the students elaborate mandatory homework.
