SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF THE MORTAR USING LIME AS BASE

The purpose of the course is to transfer knowledge and experience for the selection of mortars for interventions on monuments, compatible with the existing mortars so that additional damage is not caused over time by the addition of modern materials.

The objectives of the course are to acquaint the students with the technology of lime mortars in practice.

Parameters affecting the mechanical characteristics and physicochemical properties of lime mortars. Design of lime mortar mixes compatible with the existing primary materials. Control and specifications. Ways to improve the technical characteristics.

How students participate:

The students undertake in groups of 2 or 3 to carry out a laboratory subject exam exemption consisting of an experimental investigation (of limited extent) on the analysis of old mortars or the influence of parameters on the properties and quality of lime mortars such as mechanical strength, porosity, shrinkage, durability after from a discussion with the person in charge of the course, delivering a report evaluating the results.
