CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS

The purpose of the course is the acquisition of theoretical and applied knowledge in matters of building engineering of historical structures.

The objectives of the course are to acquaint the graduate student with terminology, knowledge of historical construction, the particularities of constructions in historical buildings, construction methods, the behavior of historical constructions.

The following subjects will be developed in the courses:

a. The building art of prehistoric times:

  • Terminology problems (borrowings and misinterpretations)
  • Materials and methods of construction (masonry, floors, staircases, openings, anti-seismic care, etc.)
  • The evolution of a building over time (conversions, additions and their effects on the behavior of the building)
  • Structural failures, mode of destruction
  • Architectural design and morphology

b. Building art in antiquity, in the Middle Ages and in modern times:

  • Stone, brick, wooden, metal, cast and mixed constructions
  • Masonry, arches, arches, domes and shells
  • Wooden structural elements of historic buildings (roofs, floors, stairs, frames)
  • Morphology and methods of construction.

The presentation of the archaeological data in the two sections above will be based on the interpretation of the existing situation of a prehistoric monument and the formulation of conservation and restoration proposals.
