Athanasiou Fani

Fani Athanasiou is a graduate of the School of Architecture of the University of Rome and holder of a master's degree in the "Study and Restoration of Monuments" from the same school (1982-1985). From 1986 to 2016 he worked at the Ministry of Culture in Thessaloniki with the aim of studying, restoring and highlighting ancient monuments as well as the museographic design of the Ministry of Culture's exhibitions abroad (Bologna, Copenhagen).

From 1990 to 2014 she was responsible for the implementation and head of the interdisciplinary study and supervision groups of the projects:

1. Study and restoration of the houses of the northern hill of ancient Olynthos (1990-2000), in Halkidiki

2. Study, restoration and promotion of the ruins of the palace of Galerius in Thessaloniki (1994-2014)

3., Study, restoration, protection and promotion of the Macedonian Tomb of Makridis in Derveni (2008-2015).

 

In 2008 the project "Restoration and promotion of the palace of Galerius". was awarded by the European Union and Europa Nostra with the Cultural Heritage Medal (Category, Restoration of monuments) "for the exemplary restoration and maintenance of the ruins and for the set of interventions that transformed an abandoned site into a pole of attraction in the heart of the modern city"

 

He has published books and articles on the architecture, materials and construction methods of ancient buildings, as well as on theoretical and other issues related to the restoration and promotion of archaeological sites and monuments. He participates with announcements in international and pan-Hellenic conferences as well as with lectures in the relevant graduate departments of the Greek and Italian Universities. Today, among others, he deals voluntarily as a member of cultural groups and Associations with problems related to the management of archaeological sites.
