He was born in Athens in 1975. He first studied (1999-2002) Construction Project Planning and Management (B.Sc. Hons (First Class)) and then (2002) obtained a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Manchester (UMIST). The subject of his doctoral thesis was the study and analysis of the main physical causes governing the wear and corrosion of construction materials. Before his election as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Cyprus (June, 2015), Dr. Ioannou worked as an Assistant Professor (2009-2015), Lecturer (2005-2009) and Visiting Lecturer (2003-2005) in the same Department, as well as a Researcher at the University of Edinburgh (2002-2003). From November 2015 to November 2017 he was the President of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a member of the Senate of the University of Cyprus. Dr. Ioannou is a member of ETEK and RILEM. He is also actively involved in a number of Technical Committees of the Cyprus Standardization Organization.

Characterization of traditional and other building materials (eg stones, mortars, bricks, aggregates)? Capillary flow phenomena in porous media? Corrosion mechanisms of materials and monuments? Crystallization of salts? Environmentally friendly and energy efficient composite materials
