SPECTROSCOPY: INFRARED (FTIR), ULTRAVIOLET- VISIBLE AND RAMAN

Purpose of the course:

Introduction to the principles of Raman, Infrared and Ultraviolet – Visible spectroscopic techniques and their application to the diagnosis of artworks.

Educational objectives:

Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with Raman, infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic techniques and with the analytical possibilities they provide for the study and identification of inorganic and organic components of works of art. They will also be able to choose the appropriate technique depending on the nature of the material to be studied but also on the location and condition of the work of art.

Course Content

– Introduction to the principles of Raman spectroscopy.

– Application of Raman spectroscopy in the analysis and study of works of art.

– Introduction to the principles of infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

– Analysis techniques with infrared spectroscopy.

– Application of infrared spectroscopy in the analysis and study of works of art.

– Introduction to the principles of UV-Vis spectroscopy.

– Application of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy in the analysis and study of works of art.

– Instrumentation of Raman, infrared and visible ultraviolet spectrophotometers.

– Demonstration of the application of spectroscopic techniques in the analysis of artwork materials.
