LABORATORY COURSES ON DIAGNOSTIC METHODS: ORMYLIA

Purpose of the course:

The purpose of this course is to learn and become familiar with the application of analytical methods for the diagnosis and documentation of the materials and structure of cultural heritage works.

 

Educational objectives:

To understand the theoretical background, the basic operating principles of organology and the application of diagnostic methods to the science of conservation and interdisciplinary documentation of cultural heritage works.

 

Analysis of the lesson:

The course includes 5 laboratory exercises involving techniques and corresponding methodologies of analytical study, image or spectrum acquisition and processing applied to the investigation of the composition, physicochemical properties or pathology of materials and the characterization of the structure and state of conservation of cultural heritage works.

EXERCISE 1 Non-destructive identification of works of art using multispectral imaging and tomographic methods
EXERCISE 2 Visible spectroscopy - Chromatometry
EXERCISE 3 Infrared Reflectography
EXERCISE 4 Optical microscopy
EXERCISE 5 Art documentation systems - Databases

Notes are provided that include the theoretical background, the content of each laboratory exercise and as well as relevant bibliography.
