STATIC & SEISMIC BEHAVIOUR OF HISTORICAL CONSTRUCTIONS. PATHOLOGY OF STATIC SYSTEM. METHODS & TECHNIQUES OF REPAIR & REINFORCEMENT

The aim of the course is the presentation of the historical evolution of materials and types of load-bearers in the historical constructions (structural elements, structural systems) and also, of the pathology of load-bearers under static and dynamic loads; the presentation of the operation principles in the bearing system (reversibility, compatibility of materials etc.) and the methods and techniques of repair and reinforcement (repair and reinforcement of masonry, metal stitches, pre-stressing, buttresses, tractors, rings).

The course is concerned with the following: the location of the arrangement of structural elements that make up the structural system in a historical construction, the surveying of the pathology due to loads and deformations, the estimation of accident potential in the bearing system, the knowledge of the operation principles in the bearing system and the possibility to choose methods and techniques of repair and reinforcement.

The following subjects will be developed in the courses:

  • Materials and types of load-bearers during the Classical Period. Behaviour and pathology of load-bearers under static and dynamic loads.
  • Materials and types of load-bearers during the Roman, Byzantine and post-Byzantine times. Behaviour and pathology of the load-bearers under static and dynamic loads.
  • Materials and types of load-bearers in modern times. Behaviour and pathology of load-bearers under static and dynamic loads.
  • Protected constructions of the 20th century with reinforced concrete. Bearing system arrangement, materials, pathology.
  • Operation principles in the bearing system (reversibility, compatibility of materials, etc.)
  • Methods and techniques of repair and reinforcement (repair and reinforcement of masonry, metal stitches, pre-stressing, buttresses, tractors, rings)
  • Materials and types of load-bearers in metallic protected constructions. The structural steel as a material of new bearing systems in protected buildings.
