CONTRIBUTION OF COLOUR SCIENCE IN THE MEASUREMENT AND DOCUMENTATION OF COLOUR IN PAINTINGS AND HISTORICAL MONUMENTS

Course objective: Familiarization with the principles of Color Science and the application of Colorimetry in documenting the color of works of art and (illustrated) historical monuments. The precise measurement of color and spectral reflectance allows a point-by-point examination of the (painting) surface, contributing to the recognition of the composition of materials and the study of their physical properties.
The measurement contributes to the understanding of the role of color in shaping the aesthetic effect of the surface. At the same time, the study of the physiology of vision illuminates the mechanisms of the visual system as well as the factors that shape the way the human brain perceives the color of a single stimulus or a color composition. Colorimetry is applied to the study and systematic monitoring of the state of conservation of the work and the possible color changes that occur over time under the influence of atmospheric aging factors, conservation treatments or other causes.

Educational objectives:
Understanding the basic theoretical principles of color science and the physiology of color perception as well as deepening the applications of colorimetry in conservation science and the interdisciplinary documentation of cultural heritage projects.

Analysis of the lesson:
- Basic principles of the physics and chemistry of color as a result of the interaction of light with matter.
- Visible spectroscopy
- Elements of the physiology of human vision related to the way color is perceived. How is the nature of color perceived? How is a color stimulus translated by the visual system?
- Theoretical background of modern colorimetry
- Trichromatic theory, Trichromatic spaces, Standard colorimetric systems RGB (CIE, 1931), XYZ (CIE, 1931), MUNSELL system, Uniform color spaces (CIELAB 1976, etc.).
- Methodology of non-destructive measurement of color with the help of various types of spectrophotometers
– Applications of colorimetry in the documentation and systematic monitoring of the state of conservation of the surface of paintings and historical monuments.
